A chronology 1855 - '90

1855 Johan Herman Wijnne and Barend Cornelis Barends found Wijnne Barends in Groningen.
1861 - 1866 Wijnne Barends takes participating interests in ships, five at first, but more later. Five years later the company has interests in thirteen ships, including a steamship named ‘Time is Money'.
1876 The opening of the Eemskanaal offers new opportunities. Wijnne Barends opens an office in Delfzijl. This will be the new head office a few years later.
The nineteen thirties The Dutch shipping industry is under pressure from the crisis that has also affected inland shipping. Wijnne Barends, too, is affected but manages to survive.

A chronology 1952 - 1970

1952 The end of the Second World War signals the start of better times. The M.S. ‘Marie-Christine’ is put into service. Specially developed, the ship is fully owned by the company.
1955 Wijnne Barends celebrates its one hundredth anniversary. It is a great year. Of all 1000 coasters in the Netherlands, 130 are affiliated with Wijnne Barends.
1960s The Dutch coastal trade is hit by another economic crisis. Wijnne Barends decides to invest in ships to secure the company's future.
1970 Foundation of Terminal Delfzijl (now: Wijnne Barends Logistics).

A chronolgy 1972 - 1999

1972 Wijnne Barends becomes a limited company and ceases its shipping activities in Groningen. The travel agency and air transport activities remain in Groningen.
1973 Foundation of Groundservice Groningen Airport (GGA).
1991 New ships are designed to meet new demands placed on the transport of timber products.  Sister ships of different tonnages (high cubic 3000 and 4000) are put into service.
1999 Wijnne Barends moves to the new premises on Handelskade Oost in Delfzijl on 1 November. Construction of the first 5000 ton ship.

A chronology 2000 - 2005

2000 Wijnne Barends is certified under ISO 9002 and the International Safety Management (ISM).
2001 Opening of a new deepwater terminal. Start of the ‘very high cubic 2000 ton ships’.
2002 Groundservice Groningen Airport (GGA) is sold.
2003 Spliethoff’s Bevrachtingskantoor B.V. in Amsterdam becomes main shareholder and the company’s Director under its Articles of Association.
2004 Wijnne Barends is certified under the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS).
2005 The company celebrates its 150th anniversary.
